Year over year PS3 sales more than double for quarter

Sony announced today in their first quarter FY 2010 report that sales of their Playstation 3 console doubled, jumping over 110% versus the same quarter the year prior.  PS3 sales for the 3 month period ending June 30, 2010 totalled 2.4 million consoles versus 1.1 million for the same quarter 2009.  This takes Sony’s PS3 total for calendar year 2010 to 4.6 million consoles sold in the first half of the year.  By contrast, the PS3’s closest competitor, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console sold 3 million consoles during the same period.  This has effectively narrowed the 360 console’s worldwide lead over the PS3 to approximately 3 million units from nearly 8 million at the 360′s height.

PS3 software also enjoyed a hefty spike according to Sony’s report, increasing nearly 70% versus the same quarter before.  The PS3 console is expected by Sony to sell 15 million consoles for the fiscal year ending March, 2011.

The Networked Products and Services division responsible for the Playstation brand of products has all but eliminated the losses posted during the same quarter of 2009 despite a strong yen versus the US dollar and Euro cutting into revenue.  The Network Division posted a loss of 3.8 billion Yen compared to a loss of 36.7 billion the year before.  However, restructuring efforts on Sony’s behalf appear to be taking root as the company handily beat analyst’s loss for the quarter posting a profit of 67.02 billion yen and raising their yearly forecast to 180 billion yen.
